I will admit, I found this one quite hard to write about at first, it’s not really a subject I was all that interested in, until I delved a little deeper and looked at the facts. It is estimated that each year, humanity as a whole, throw away around 23 billion plastic toothbrushes (yes you heard right). That works out at a frankly astonishing 250,000 metric ton’s of plastic each and every year. This also shows no signs of stopping, with all of the major brands sticking to their guns and continuing with petrochemical based plastics.
Now, I am not going to go into all of the reasons why we should be avoiding plastic, particularly when using it in our mouths. I feel the Netflix documentary ‘The Plastic Detox’ sums this all up very nicely, and I am certainly not qualified to go into the finer details. However, the idea of microplastics quite literally being brushed into my mouth, is enough to put me off and so the hunt began.
This actually turned out to be quite hard, I already had an Oral B toothbrush and I was initially determined to find replaceable brush heads for this. This is actually a real minefield, with quite a few questionable products with some very bold claims. Unfortunately, through my research, I was unable to find anything that really ticked all of the boxes and decided to look elsewhere.
After trying out quite a few bamboo manual brushes, I was beginning to loose faith, but then one of my sisters showed me their SURI toothbrush. Initially I was sceptical, I was under the impression that a brush would need a rotating head to clean well, but after some debate (and covertly inspecting my sisters teeth) I decided to take the plunge. Luckily, this all happened as the SURI 2.0 was released, and I placed my order.
I will be reviewing the brush in much the same way I do anything else, long term data and the following review criteria: Material Credentials, Performance, Durability and Lifespan.
Material Credentials
This for me is the stand out reason to look at SURI, and not just their new SURI 2.0 brush, they have other offerings too. When looking for a brush, the non negotiables were plastic free bristles and plastic free brush heads, luckily SURI take this a step further and the handle is made from recycled aluminium. This not only gives the brush a strong, sleek and sturdy feel, it also means it is more easily recycled in the future.
The brush heads are made from plant fiber and castor oil, which means you aren’t brushing microplastics directly into your body. Suri also recycle the heads, they send you a postage bag to return the heads along with your replacements, they then turn these into other things. At the time of writing, this includes a soap dish and the clip on brush head covers that come with the brush.
I would of liked it more if the optional brush case was also made from these recylced heads, but it is currently made from undisclosed materials, likely some sort of plastic. The case is however very well made, comes with an UV bulb for cleaning your brush head and also boasts a non proprietary USB C charging point. While the brush does come with a wireless charger, I prefer the case, largely down to convenience. I also travel a lot in my full time job, so appreciate how easy this is to use.
Performance
I toyed with the idea of taking close up pictures of my teeth, and quickly (luckily for you) decided this wasn’t going to make for easy reading. I will admit to having had some issues over the years, I split a tooth straight down the middle a few years ago, which means I have a crown on that tooth. I also have another crown, which is more down to my inability to properly clean my teeth when I was younger. What this means, is I do have some sensitivity and quickly feel the effects of substandard dental products (floride and hydroxyapatite free toothpaste to blame there).
The SURI 2.0 hasn’t dissapointed here, my teeth feel clean and I haven’t felt any discomfort at all. I am also using the SURI toothpaste
